Introduction<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

I consider the figure of the skipper to be indispensable and indisputable on board a sailing yacht that makes crossings, both coastal and oceanic. \u201cWhere there is no skipper there is no sailor\u201d says the wise saying, and this should be understood and recognized by all the crew and guests on board, with no exceptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

While, in a few hours trip to anchor and swim in a small Mediterranean cove, and then return, someone might consider that it is not necessary to appoint a skipper, however, as soon as we move away from home port, a strong gust of wind, or any other incident, it is necessary to have a command structure on board, where everyone knows where his or her place is.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the chapter \u201cQualities of an ocean sailor\u201d we saw some considerations on aspects that characterize a good sailor; grouped into personal qualities (flexibility, keeping calm, companionship, etc.), physical qualities (agility, visual acuity, etc.) and technical knowledge (sail handling, navigation, mechanics and electricity, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n

All these qualities, of course, are applicable to the skipper of a sailboat. However, other aspects or qualities that are more specific to the skipper can be highlighted and will be discussed in this new chapter. These qualities include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Experience in sailing.<\/span><\/p>\n

– In-depth knowledge of the sailboat being skippered.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Quick decision making.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Ability to anticipate the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Create a good atmosphere on board.
