It is only a few weeks since the book “Magallanes frente a Elcano” (El Juicio de la Historia) \u2018Magellan versus Elcano (The Trial of History)\u2019 was published. Its author, Sabino Laucirica, is a Captain in the Merchant Navy, Researcher of Basque Maritime History and Historical Advisor, Writer and Advisor to the Philippe Cousteau Foundation – Ocean Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book is published by the Asociaci\u00f3n Cultural y Cient\u00edfica Iberoamericana, and tells the story of the most important maritime feat carried out by mankind, the first circumnavigation of the Earth, and is the result of five years of research by the author.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last 28th November, the book was presented in the Conference Hall of the Sociedad Bilba\u00edna. It was attended by the Naval Commander of Bilbao, Mr. Tom\u00e1s Garc\u00eda-Figueras, and was a success in terms of attendance and interest in the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n

PROLOGUE to “MAGALLANES frente a ELCANO (El juicio de la Historia)”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

El comienzo de este trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n, convertido en libro, naci\u00f3 de una reflexi\u00f3n personal \u00bfCu\u00e1l es el motivo por el que Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano no ha encontrado el sitio que le corresponde en la historia?. <\/em>Despu\u00e9s de analizar detenidamente el resultado de la expedici\u00f3n de Magallanes he podido sacar algunas conclusiones.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Aquel fue un viaje con dos partes encontradas desde su comienzo, la parte portuguesa y el mando de la flota en manos de un aventurero cortesano portugu\u00e9s, Fernao de Magalhaes y la parte castellana encabezada por un noble Juan de Cartagena, ambos inexpertos marinos, aquel fue un viaje a la gloria de nobles y cortesanos, de aventureros y pr\u00f3fugos de la justicia, un viaje al que a\u00f1o y medio despu\u00e9s de su partida se le pierde la pista en el laberinto de canales de la Patagonia, un viaje de motines y deserciones, un viaje de castigos y ejecuciones, un viaje del que tres a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s e inesperadamente emboca en la barra de Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda una nao desvencijada, haciendo agua permanentemente y tripulada por dieciocho fam\u00e9licos supervivientes y tres ind\u00edgenas mandados por un personaje que hab\u00eda pasado inadvertido hasta entonces, un joven de 36 a\u00f1os llamado Juan Sebasti\u00e1n del Cano, vasco y reclamado por la justicia, un joven que en su primera carta desde el mismo buque le tutea al emperador, le dice que ya han llegado y le pide favores para s\u00ed y los que le acompa\u00f1an.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

La arrogancia de este joven no pasa desapercibida por la corte, no es merecedor de gloria, es un simple aventurero con cuentas pendientes con la justicia, que ni siquiera se atreve a confirmar que las Molucas han ca\u00eddo del lado castellano. No le dar\u00e1n nunca su sitio en la gloria, tan s\u00f3lo el perd\u00f3n real, ni un s\u00f3lo ducado de los prometidos, ni la Orden de Santiago, destinada a la nobleza.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A partir de aqu\u00ed su haza\u00f1a navegar\u00e1 entre la penumbra y la incomprensi\u00f3n \u00a0de las autoridades pol\u00edticas y culturales de este pa\u00eds.\u00a0<\/em>Yo, como capit\u00e1n y vasco, me identifico con \u00e9l y quiero aportar mi esfuerzo a reivindicar su maltratada figura.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
