My dad also sailed with his two children (my brother and me), who were the same age as us: we were always a very close-knit family crew. That’s where we started learning about races, the rules, the starting grids, who had the right of way, and we gradually improved. But my dad didn’t like to lose: the first sailboat he bought was a classic, comfortable, but very slow. So he sold that one and bought another that was faster, a Hanse, and then he ended up with an X50, which was like a Lamborghini that sailed itself.

Did you always accompany him in those regattas??

Yes, we always went with him. It was my first school, knowing what it felt like in each position. So we started training, each of us practicing our position, learning which way the wind was blowing because some of us started from scratch. I would get on the sailboat and feel very safe, very confident, but some of them had a hard time understanding why one trimmed the sail for a certain reason, why the mainsail car was up or down, certain things that, due to an innate knowledge, from having done it all my life, perhaps I did without thinking… Without understanding much but with enthusiasm.

What were the first regattas they raced in?

After a year of training, I suggested we sign up for a regatta. That’s when I asked myself, “Why are we doing so well?” Then I started to draw some conclusions, based on conversations with some men, like the coach who taught and trained us: on our sailboat, there’s always good treatment, we never yell at each other, we don’t disrespect each other, we look out for each other and support each other.

The second thing is perhaps the way I address the crew, for example, when we’re about to tack, I say, “Girls, we’re going to tack in 3, 2, 1, tacking…” (she uses a very soft tone). I remember with my brother or my dad, yelling: “Let’s tack, now! Why aren’t you tacking?” The instruction was the same, but the result was different. Because when you’re under pressure, they yell at you, you make mistakes, whereas with peace and harmony, everything goes differently… The second thing a captain told me when he came aboard once was about organization: because women are multifunctional, while they were thinking about the sheet, the rope, the sail, there was a really good and rich choreography that happens between you, you who are methodical and don’t even need to talk about it.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider divider_weight=”3px” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”6px||10px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://navegantesoceanicos.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Amar-es-cuidar-el-Mar.webp” alt=”Amar es cuidar el Mar” title_text=”Amar es cuidar el Mar” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”27px||1px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_divider divider_weight=”3px” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||7px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

What are the winds, currents, and tides like in this region?
How do they behave?

That’s a great question, yes, because when people ask us from elsewhere and we say we’re from Chile, they say, “Oh, well, so you know how to sail.” Here, our sea is tremendous. First, because we have the Humboldt Current, which is always present. Second, we have a lot of wind, usually 35, 40, or 43 knots, and also huge waves. Suddenly you look around and think, “I’m in the perfect storm.” That’s why when you do those long crossings, you reef your sails and sometimes you don’t even use sails… just a little motor to let the waves and current carry you. Also, the seabed is very rocky, and there are shallows that you have to be extremely careful of.

I thought it was deep because of the mountain range…

The first part is deep, but then near the coast there are many islands and these shallows that keep popping up, so we have to be careful of rocks, like this one and that one… If you go 40 miles out, you obviously won’t find anything else. Besides, there’s a lot of swell; the waves here are strong, so it’s not normal to be sailing in a milk cup. The day you see there are no waves at all, it’s because something’s wrong.

I’ve sailed in the Mediterranean, with my family, on a catamaran, and I was thinking, “This is a joke, what kind of sailing are we going to do here?” (laughs) because it’s so gentle. Here we go out in the cold, freezing cold! Wind, waves, freezing cold. When I’ve sailed in other places and I’m wearing a t-shirt, I think, “How strange, sailing without clothes!” (laughs) because here you can only see your eyes. There’s a really nice picture of him with tears in his eyes, like he’s saying, “Daisy, you did it!” Little by little we started to level up and improve our technique until we were invited to the Northern Regatta.

I understand that the Northern Regatta is one of the most important sailing events in the country.

Yes, in Chile there are two big regattas held in January: one in Chiloé, in the south, for a week; another week in the north, in La Serena. They’re the national championships. So we took the sailboat there; it was our first long voyage, 43 hours of racing, incredibly tough, but a great experience, because we came in first, third, and fourth place, competing against big boats with their own history. Finally, when the championship ended, we came in third. We couldn’t believe it; even CNN called me (laughs). Of the 60 boats that participated, only two had female crews. The rest were all men. He had passed away five months before this regatta. Once, for example, we lost wind, so we started calling for him. We played that game, and after 10 minutes, the wind would rise and the sail would fill. It was a coincidence, but it happened all the time. I was sailing and I felt it, of course, but I’m his daughter, it’s very subjective. But this also happened to the other women; they didn’t feel alone, that there was something there, a presence that accompanied us. The regatta finished on Saturday, and on Sunday, a sailor who always asked me for work moved the sailboat. But like I said, this sailboat belonged to my dad; his things were on it, his tie, his awards. I borrowed it, but it was his boat.

On the return trip, it started taking on water. It was 60 miles from the coast. The captain started making distress calls, and they were able to contact the Navy three hours later, obviously with the engine running at full speed, to bring the sailboat to shore. The sailboat started sinking at five in the morning. By eight, it was half full of water, with only the stern above water. The three crew members were waiting up there to be rescued. The sailors arrived, brought the people aboard, left, and the boat sank immediately. They called me then to tell me what had happened, that the people were okay (which was the most important thing), but that the sailboat had sunk at 1,000 meters and that it was impossible to salvage it. It was, oh, like saying, “My dad wanted to go to the bottom of the sea.” It was, you see, I taught you to sail, I gave you the push, now it’s up to you from here on out because I won’t be around anymore..

Were you able to continue sailing after such an impressive shipwreck?

Yes, I was very affected.
