Round the world Route

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FIRST HOURS OF THE 10TH VENDÉE GLOBE….

For the 40 solo skippers who will take the start of the Vendée Globe on Sunday off Les Sables d’Olonne, off the west coast of France, the first few hours look set to offer a relatively gentle introduction to the non-stop around-the-world race held every four years. Instead of the dangerous autumn storms that often batter the Bay of Biscay in early November, a benign 5-10 knot breeze is expected to set the record fleet of 40 60-foot IMOCAs on their way.

In fact, many of the sailors would prefer more breeze to head south towards Cape Finisterre, in the far northwest corner of Spain, to open up the giant fleet more quickly and reduce the potential risk of collisions. The solo skippers, who expect to be at sea for 70 to 110 days, should be on high alert.
