Having a well-designed, balanced and robust electrical system on board a sailing yacht is essential. In this first chapter of the on-line book ELECTRICITY ON BOARD we will deal with the first step necessary for such design, which is the calculation of the daily electrical consumption of the equipment on board.

In the previous chapter we completed the first part of the design of our electrical system, which was to estimate the total daily consumption of the equipment we use on board. In this second chapter of the on-line book “ELECTRICITY ON BOARD” we address the next step, which is to determine the total battery capacity we need on board our sailboat.

In this third chapter of the on-line book ONBOARD ELECTRICS, we will develop a modern concept of power generation to have a robust and balanced electrical system on board, and we will analyze the different options of energy sources (solar, wind and hydro) that we have at our disposal with recommendations for ocean (bluewater) and coastal sailboats.
