Introduction.
In the chapter “Storm Strategies” of the online book “Heavy weather sailing” we covered the main factors to consider when facing a storm, especially the serious risk posed by a breaking wave to a sailboat that becomes broadside to the sea. We also described the two possible strategies for sailing: “Winds up the Storm” and “Running the Storm.”
As we saw in that chapter, “Winds up the Storm” means facing it with the wind and waves on the bow, and among the most important techniques are “Hove to” and/or deploying a “Parachute Anchor.”
On the other hand, “Running the Storm” means facing it with the wind on the quarter or stern, and among the available techniques is using a stern-towing drogue device; its main purpose is to prevent the sailboat from becoming broadside to the sea.
The stern-towing drogue devices that we can use on a sailboat during a storm can be classified into two categories:
– Low-pull o speed limiting, these are devices that reduce the boat’s speed to some extent (while still maintaining a speed of 4-8 knots), limit surfing, and improve the boat’s handling. The Galerider device, which we will discuss in this chapter, is a low-pull towing device..
– Medium-pull, these are devices designed to significantly reduce the boat’s speed to 1-2 knots and keep the stern aligned with the wind and waves. The Jordan’s series drogue device falls into the medium-pull category.
In this chapter, we will describe the “Galerider” device in more detail. We will explain what it is and some considerations to keep in mind when implementing it on your sailboat.
