“Sailing for Prosperity” is a social and environmental initiative born from the union of a passion for sailing with a commitment to protecting the beauty and marine ecosystem of the Sea of Cortés, as well as restoring the connection between the sea and the communities that inhabit its shores.
“Sailing for Prosperity” offers the opportunity to learn about and participate in projects whose primary objective is the prosperity and conservation of ecosystems in the Sea of Cortés region, through sailing voyages and scientific expeditions aboard two iconic sailboats, the “Sayula II” and the “SY Diablesse.”
Through science, “Sailing for Prosperity” will participate in and support current and future projects within the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of the Sea of Cortés. Furthermore, through sailing, expeditions, and other activities, “Sailing for Prosperity” will promote this sport and its traditional values within local communities.
“Sailing for Prosperity” was founded in 2025 by Cristóbal González-Aller Pita and “Capitales Orinoco.” While its roots are in the Sea of Cortés, its vision extends to other, more distant regions. In the coming years, starting with the Pacific Ocean, the goal is to continue developing a network of regenerative action, storytelling, and solidarity.
The “Sayula II” is an iconic ketch-type sailboat, nearly 20 meters in length, a true symbol of Mexico’s maritime history. With Ramón Carlín as skipper and owner, it won the first edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race (now known as the “Ocean Race”) in 1973. The “SY Diablesse” is an elegant and classic sloop-type sailboat, approximately 29 meters in length.
As an added benefit, promoting the activities of “Sailing for Prosperity” both nationally and internationally will help raise awareness about the importance of the Sea of Cortés and the state of its ecosystems, with the aim of promoting the development of sustainable economic models.
On the other hand, the APM (Maritime Prosperity Area) Project aims to foster community engagement and co-design sustainable marine resource management strategies within designated Maritime Prosperity Area (APMs) in the Sea of Cortés (see image above).
To this end, the APM project promotes and organizes participatory activities and workshops that allow us to understand and share a common vision of how to effectively protect marine resources.
“Sailing for Prosperity”, through the expeditions it undertakes aboard the sailboats “Sayula II” and “SY Diablesse”, can serve as a platform and space for collaboration, bringing together different key stakeholders with the protected marine areas and their communities. This will involve providing scientific expertise through onboard biologists and experts, and facilitating the joint development of projects and strategies.
