On November 15th, the Vertical Tour will kick off in Castellón, a pioneering initiative that combines sailing, adventure, science, and awareness. Paula Gonzalvo (Allende los Mares) and Pedro Jiménez (Alegría Marineros) are ready to begin their 65,000-kilometer journey over 12 months, following a completely unprecedented route: from the 0º meridian to the 180º meridian, that is, from the Arctic to Antarctica. Their sailboat, the Alegría Marineros, is also ready—an aluminum vessel specially reinforced to navigate the ice of the polar circles. All of this will be shared with the public in the coming days at events to be held in Madrid and Castellón.
This Saturday, November 8th, the Copérnico venue in Madrid will host a launch party, including a concert, for which invitations can be purchased at vueltavertical.com. For its part, the Royal Nautical Club of Castellón will be the venue where, on November 12, a press conference will be held, which will be attended by some of the highest local authorities and will highlight the institutional support for this absolutely historic adventure.
Navigation and science, told live.
The Vuelta Vertical expedition is pioneering and groundbreaking for many reasons. Paula Gonzalvo and Pedro Jiménez will not only be spending long watches at the helm, facing waves that could exceed 10 meters in height, dangerous icebergs, and hurricane-force winds. Their journey combines adventure with science, as it will also serve to collect samples of marine biodiversity, analyze the presence of microplastics in polar waters, and record various parameters from the five oceans of our planet.
For this reason, Vuelta Vertical has secured the support of prestigious academic institutions, such as the University of Alicante, the Ramón Margalef Multidisciplinary Institute, UCN, the UN Decade of Action on Oceans, and True World.
But what’s more, and this is also innovative, the entire voyage will be broadcast live 24 hours a day, seven days a week, via the internet. The public will be able to experience the six-hour solo watches, and the maneuvers in the face of storms and icebergs, as if they were on board the Alegría Marineros.
Two experienced captains.
Paula Gonzalvo, known for her Allende los Mares (Beyond the Seas) initiative, is a captain with over 65,000 nautical miles sailed, who has also dedicated part of her efforts to communication and navigation. Pedro Jiménez, for his part, is the driving force behind the Alegría Marineros (Sailors’ Joy) sports association, and boasts experience exceeding 200,000 nautical miles, including polar crossings. Both will be responsible for bringing the Alegría Marineros to port safely.
They will only make five technical stops during their 12-month voyage, day and night, with long solo watches on deck. An adventure in itself, which also carries an important scientific and outreach component in support of the planet’s conservation. And all of it will be broadcast live. Vuelta Vertical (Vertical Loop) is a pioneering expedition that has all the ingredients to become a landmark event. That’s why these last few days ashore, before setting sail, are being used to explain the details of this great initiative to the public.
