Introduction.

In the first chapter of the online book “Handling heavy weather” we made some recommendations on the reduction of the sail area as the wind and sea conditions progressively increase. Subsequently we looked at the Storm Strategies, which are “Wind´s up the storm” and “Running off the Storm”. Within the strategy of wind´s up the storm, in the next chapter we address the technique “heave to (or hove to)”.

Before the storm reaches us, we will have decided on the strategy to follow and, if necessary, well in advance, we will prepare the storm sails. In this new chapter we will look at the main characteristics of the two types of storm sails, which are the storm mainsail (or trysail) and storm gib (or staysail), as well as some considerations on their use.
