Introduction.
In order to sail effectively and get the most out of the sails in every wind situation, our sailboat must be balanced. In this third chapter of the on-line book ‘SAIL HANDLING AND TRIMING’ we will look at this balance of forces in a sailboat from three points of view, all of which are important.
The first balance affects the aerodynamic forces that are generated in the sails and the hydrodynamic forces that are produced under the water. We will also look very generally at the balance between the heeling force and the anti-drift force, which will result in heeling of the ship and also drifting; effects that must be minimised.
Finally, in this chapter we will briefly discuss the sail balance that must be established between the turning moments generated by each of the sails we have hoisted, in order to avoid undesired luffing or broaching tendencies of our sailboat.
