A sailboat will typically have one battery dedicated exclusively to starting the ENGINE and a SERVICE battery (several batteries in the case of an ocean-going sailboat) to power the rest of the onboard equipment. This service battery bank is increasingly tending to have larger capacities.

The compartment or space where these batteries (ENGINE and SERVICE) are stored is very important on a sailboat and, due to the heavy weight of the batteries, it should ideally be located in a relatively low, central location on the boat. It should also be located close to the engine to limit cable lengths. Furthermore, the batteries should not be located above (or below) a fuel tank, filter, or other element related to the fuel circuit.
